Decision Support System:

A Decision Support System is an integrated set of computer tools allowing a decision maker to interact directly with computer to retrieve information useful in making semi structured and unstructured decisions. Example of this decisions include such things as merger and acquisition decisions, plant expansion, new product decisions portfolio management and marketing decisions.

Equally important this tool must provide the professional with access to an organization's raw data and it must allow the access to be accomplished in one step using a single uncomplicated procedure or command and without having to re-key non summary data.

5) The organizations need to access original data sometimes because efficiency is related to how well the original data is organized in the system; the Decision Support Generator should be able to interface with a true DBMS. It should also be able to access standard 'flat' files indirectly using the power of the host computer to facilitate both the user interface and data access without changing existing files.

7) The support tool must interface with several different systems and capabilities, it must be compatible with all of them, the tool must provide users with a single easily used language to access manipulate and present data in a way that will best support the end-user.
8) To facilitate formatting and manipulating displayed data, the decision support generator should ideally be able to interface with word processing software. With this capability, the DSS becomes the critical link between data processing and office automation, integrating both functions in an easily-used, straight forward, extremely powerful system.

They have well established, well controlled and well structured data processing system which provides transaction processing data necessary for DSS. Such organizations have spent extra money and personnel necessary to maintain a research and development focus. All the departments in the organization have communicated with central groups of computer. The entire departments have sufficient confidence to initiate and manage systems projects. The central computer groups have several people on its staff that either came from all other departments'. Education and training programs are used by the organizations to build mutual understanding between departments and the computer group.

1) Support decision making in ill-structured situations- in which ,precisely owing to the lack of structure, problem do not lend themselves to full computerization, and yet require computer assistance for access to and processing of voluminous amount of data.

3) Operate the ad hoc mode to suit the current needs of the user, as opposed to operating in a generally scheduled fashion as management reporting system do.

4) Support various stages of the decision making process.

5) Foster high-quality decision making by encouraging decisions based on the integration of available information and human judgment.

6) Offer flexibility as opposed to a preordained pattern of use - making it easy to accommodate the particular decision making style of an individuals.

7) Facilitate the implementation of the decisions which frequently cut across department boundaries.

8) Support group decision making particularly through group DSS (GDSS).

9) Give managers the opportunity to gain a better understanding for their business by developing and working with models.

Network Interface Cards (NIC)

A NIC (network interface card) is designed to communicate over a computer network. It allows users to connect to each other either by using cables or wirelessly if the NIC is a wireless NIC (WiFi/WNIC). Every entity on a network, a PC, printer, router, etc., that needs to communicate with other devices must have a NIC if it is to communicate over the network. On older computers, the NIC is probably an expansion card, usually PCI or PCI express. High performance cards can cost less that . NIC functionality is now often integrated into the motherboard chipset or implemented with a dedicated Ethernet chip on the motherboard.

A similar situation is true for laptop computers. At one time, a PCMCIA network card would be used in a laptop computer for the NIC just as the PCI card was used in desktop computer, but now, NIC functionality is often integrated with the motherboard.

Ethernet is the dominant standard for cable connections for wired computer networks. An Ethernet connector looks similar to a telephone connector, only larger. This connector is called "RJ45". Ethernet cables are either a shielded or unshielded cable of four twisted pairs of 24 AWG connectors, specified at 100 ohm impedance. Maximum cable length for CATX cables is 100 meters.

Network Interface Cards (NIC)

Early versions of Ethernet cables were CAT3 or CAT4 (CAT being short for category). These versions were not long lived. CAT5 and CAT5e are currently the most commonly used cables (bandwidth of 100 MHz, 100 Mbps), with CAT6 (bandwidth of 250 MHz, 1 Gbps) available and the configuration of the near-future. A CAT7 cable (bandwidth of 600 MHz) specification is in development, and should be available in a few years.

Each Ethernet NIC has a unique serial number called a "media access code" (MAC address) that is used to identify the NIC and associated computer on the network. No two NIC will have the same address, because the NIC manufacturers must purchase blocks of addresses from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

NIC cards are capable of different speeds. Speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbps) are now available. Two NIC can communicate if they differ in speed ratings, but they will communicate at the rate of the slower NIC.

On a very simple network, NIC can be used to link personal computers (PC). If the computers are connected directly to one another, the network is a "peer-to-peer" (P2P, also called an "ad hoc") network. If computers are connected directly to one another, a "cross-over" Ethernet cable is needed (also called a "Null-Modem cable"). This cable is not "straight-through" like standard Ethernet, but crosses the send and receive connectors, so that send line from computer A connects to the receive line of computer B.

For networks of a few computers, a "hub" can be used, with all of the computers connected to the hub. Any message sent from any PC will be seen by all of the computers, but only the computer with the correct MAC address will receive the message. P2P networks are useful for many purposes. File and printer sharing are the most common applications.

Networks with more than four active computers at a time will benefit from using a "network switch" instead of a hub. A network switch will direct the message to the appropriate destination, instead of each message packet being broadcast across the network. Computer A can send a message to computer B, while simultaneously, computer C sends a message to computer D. This increases the efficiency of the network. This is a simple form of a server network. An example of a client-server design is a computer server where the clients initiate a download or upload of files and the server reacts. The server would also often be responsible for interacting with printers and other servers on other networks, including satellite networks (SATCOM) or the Internet.

"Latency" is the delay caused by a network to communicate data. Latency causes not only slow service, but can result in data loss as well. Latency is usually tested by sending a message packet that is immediately returned to the sending computer. The round-trip time is defined as the latency.

Networking performance can be optimized for either latency or throughput. Networks can use a technique known as "interrupt moderation" to increase throughput and lower CPU utilization by queuing message packets and issuing fewer interrupts to the CPU. A network optimized this way would favor large transfers, reducing transfer overhead. CPU and network throughput benefit, but network latency would increase. The alternative is to fragment each message and pipeline the fragments through the network. Multiple paths from source to destination can allow overlapping. Latency can also be addressed with techniques such as prefetching (anticipating the need for data requests) and/or using multiple execution threads (multithreading).

There are two indicator LEDs on a typical NIC. A single lit green LED indicates the computer is connected to the network. This is called the "link" light. The second LED is amber in color. A flashing amber LED indicates message packet collisions are occurring. Occasional collisions are normal on a busy network, but a frequently lit amber LED is an indication of problems. A quickly flashing link LED (green) is a network activity indicator, meaning that communication is occurring. If the green link light is off, and the amber LED is blinking, then the NIC is in "power save" mode.

A wireless network interface controller (WNIC) is a NIC for connecting to a wireless network (WiFi). The standard for WiFi is IEEE 802.11. A WNIC uses an antenna to communicate with an Rf signal, most often at 2.4 GHz. Wireless connectivity development in recent years has closely paralleled wired connectivity. Like its wired cousin, a wireless card was once integrated with a PCI or PCMCIA add-on card. Now, integrated WNIC's are becoming common, especially for laptop computers.

Most people assume pressure washing a deck is simple and harmless. They simply go to their local hardware rental shop, pickup a power or pressure washer and go to it. Most people do not realize that a pressure washer can seriously damage and even ruin a deck and other wood structures. It's important to know that pressure washing isn't just about powering off dirt and grime with high pressure water. The process is actually a combination of several things, heat, water pressure, and the detergents or cleaning agents. If any one of the three are missing, the dynamics of the process is changed.

For the purposes of pressure washing a deck, let's look at the first element, pressure. For most wood and especially decks, 1500 PSI (pounds per square inch) is all that is needed to successfully clean most decks. Any higher then this and you run the risk of seriously damaging the wood. Even at 1500 PSI the possibility for damage is still there so you must be careful. Never engage the trigger while the nozzle is on or only a few inches away from the wood surface. Always engage the trigger with the nozzle facing away from the surface and move it into position slowly.

How to Pressure Wash a Deck

Tips come in different degrees and cause what is called the fan width of the spray coming out of the end of the nozzle. For cleaning a deck, you should use a fan width of 40' to 60' degrees. This should be sufficient in most cases. For reference, a degree of zero (0) would be a straight stream of pressurized water, which you never want to hit any wood surface with.

As far as detergents or cleaners go, check with your local big box hardware store or hardware rental shop. There are so many different types of cleaners it would be impossible to list them here. A Conversation With Adam Laurie

Adam Laurie is Chief Security Officer and a Director of The Bunker Secure Hosting Ltd. Adam has always been interested in computers. His profile include working as a computer programmer on PDP-8 and other mini computers, various Unix, Dos and CP/M based micro computers as they emerged in the eighties. Adam Laurie gave the world first CD ripper ever, 'CDGRAB'. As the internet evolved, Adam and (his brother) Ben became interested in open source projects, and they come up with 'Apache-SSL'-which went on to become the de-facto standard secure web server. Since then Adam is actively involved in busting several myths about wireless technologies, Infrared devices and bluetooth protocols. Lately, Adam unveiled his latest research about RFID's and different threats to privacy. Adam also released a python library "RFIDIOt" for accessing and reading RFID devices. Adam and Ben also pioneered the concept of re-using military data centers (housed in underground nuclear bunkers) as secure hosting facilities. Adam has been a senior member of staff at DEFCON since 1997, and also acted as a member of staff during the early years of the Black Hat Briefings.

Adam: Well, I started off with computers in early eighties, when my father was the editor of a computer magazine in UK. So before the computers and the windows that we see today, he used to bring along micro computers, which seems to be pretty interesting for kids. I and my brother used to play with these machines and then my father brought them back to magazine. So we almost witnessed the whole evolution of the computers.

A Conversation With Adam Laurie

Omer: Since how long have you been associated with events like Black Hat and DefCon?

Adam: The first DefCon that I attended was DefCon IV. Then I attended the DefCon V again and became a "goon" there and there has been no stopping ever since. So, it is almost over 10 years now. When Black Hat first started off, a lot of goons working for DefCon also worked for Black Hat, but it was only for a couple of years. As soon as it became a public commercial event, they hired staff for the work that goons used to do.

Omer: You wrote the first CD ripper, how do you feel about it? RIAA and other recording associations and must be a great fan of yours?

Adam: (Laughs) the problem is that when I wrote the first CD ripper "CDGRAB", the hard disk was so expensive and it used to fill all the hard disk space. So commercially it was really a stupid thing to do, because it would just fill up the entire hard disk and that would cost you 30 times more then a CD. So when I wrote the tool there was no commercial use of it, until years later when someone came up with compression standards and hard disk space got cheaper.

Omer: Are you still maintaining the tool 'CDGRAB'?

Adam: Not really. It was written even before Windows was a popular environment. It was a command line tool originally, but we did a Windows version too. It was programmed in C. Then we just stopped maintaining it, we got distracted by the internet phenomenon so much that we started looking into other ideas.

Omer: You have also been a part of Apache-SSL project, which later became the de-facto standard of the secure web. How the whole idea did come to life?

Adam: It is actually my brother's idea. I have been involved in the later stages to do the testing, release and documentation. It was Ben Laurie who actually coded the Apache-SSL. The whole idea came even before the internet. We had email addresses even before the web was really famous. We started with bulletin boards (fidonet) and then when internet came along, there was a company in the UK, called "Daemon", who was actually just bunch of people chatting on the bulletin boards, before they formed this company. So they were just chatting that if 100 of us could get together, may be we could buy a dedicated leased line onto a service provider, and we'll just put up some modems there and then you can just dial in and get on to the internet. We were one of the first groups in the UK, who pooled up the resources together to get on to the internet and that company later became one of the biggest service providers in UK. It has nothing to do with us; we were just the first customers. We then started doing the internet projects and we realized that there is no secure open source web server over the internet. U.S had some border restrictions over the use of cryptography. Outside the U.S you couldn't get a cryptographic web server. So we went to the UK government and asked that what the rules for using crypto in UK are. They responded that its somewhat a grey area, we are still not sure, but just keep a record of whatever you send across and that shouldn't be a problem. We thought that it's not something really practical. But luckily then Cambridge University and Oxford University stepped forward and said that we will do the distribution for you, you write the code and then publish it to us. We'll put it on our public servers. So technically this makes them the publisher of the software and if they have any legal challenges to face, they have big legal departments who can deal with this.

Omer: Was this a formal association with Oxford University and Cambridge University?

Adam: Not really. It was an informal association. It was just an agreement. My brother wrote the code, we published it to them; and they put it onto their web servers. And then it became the de-facto standard of the web, because it was the only one around.

Omer: Were you guys expecting it to be that big?

Adam: We never expected it to be that big.

Omer: You have also been held responsible for finding some critical bluetooth bugs? What was that?

Adam: Well I discovered Blue Snarfing, it is actually a problem found in bluetooth phones that can be exploited to pull out phone books and other information without the knowledge of the owner. The problem was quite wide spread and it involved some of the very popular business phones like Nokia 6310i. There was a great problem communicating with the cell phone manufacturers, because they were not just used to the idea of someone coming to them and saying that you have a problem. So, you know, the whole idea of full disclosure and the philosophy of open source are quite alien to them. At first, they treated the problem with suspicion that why would you tell us or I am trying to blackmail them. So, they really didn't understand that all we want is to get the problem fixed. We want to use the technology, here's the security hole, and this is how you reproduce it, just go ahead and fix it.

Omer: Has it been fixed now?

Adam: It has on most phones now. In fact, about a year later, they arranged bluetooth security events. It's actually a nice thing to do. All manufacturers get together in hotel, do the interoperability tests, and run them through security procedures. There's no compensation on that level, where everything is designed to function properly. We did this for around 18 months and it was quite a success. We found many problems and they fixed it before it hits the street. But then they discontinued the program and I don't think that they are doing any security specific testing any more, so I do expect more problems.

Omer: Lately you have been inspired by RFID's. Please tell us about that.

Adam: Okay. There are two areas that I am looking into. One is where RFID is used as an authentication token like you have door entry systems. So, the problem there is that all the tag is doing is giving out just an ID number, which they claim is unique, like your door key is unique, but it can be of course copied. The industry is trying to tell us that an electronic key is somehow magically different and it cannot be copied. So I demonstrated that these RFID's can be pretty easily copied and a good copy will open the door and it's not perfectly safe to use the technology. Actually there was quite an interesting situation recently, when there was a company that threatened to sue on breach of patents if they revealed how their systems work or if they demonstrated a device that can clone the door keys. So what I have been doing is using manufacturer's own technology against them. So what I do is that instead of building emulation, I take an existing door tag and reprogrammed it to pretend to be another tag or even to pretend to be another manufacturer's authentication token. So what I found was original methods that manufacturer used to program the door tags in the first place and what protocols do they use.

Omer: You have ruined infrared devices, explored wi-fi environments, busted bluetooth and now demystifying RFID's. Why are you against technology? (In good humor)

Adam: (Laughs) I am not against technology. I am against inappropriately used technology. I think technology is great. The reason why I wanted them to fix bluetooth is that I liked the technology and I wanted to be able to rely on it. I don't want it to make me insecure and the same is with RFID's. I think that the idea is dangerous that the tags are magically unique and they cannot be cloned, of course they can be cloned.

Omer: Why do you think that there is a gap between the product development and the security of the products? Lousy administrators and poorly configured devices is one thing, but the intrinsically flawed protocols, buggy stacks and second-rate implementations is another. What do you think could be the reason?

Adam: Well I think it's usually the cost. The manufacturers are just looking for ways to increase revenues and doing a proper security is often an expected thing and they would say that well, we'll worry about it later, if it becomes a problem. So the security of the system is second consideration and by the time it becomes a problem, it's already too late because it's already deployed. At this stage they should stop and do what they should have done in the first place. But the culture is changing. The internet has gone through a very long and painful process of learning that. The internet used to be the same software vendors and they never always released patches as Microsoft is doing it now. The old Microsoft would say that there are no problems, play it down and hope nobody hears about it, discredit the person who find the problem in the first place. But they realized that actually engaging with the open source and even the hacker community is a good thing for every one. It's about revealing problems and getting them fixed and its far better to admit to the public that you have an issue, deal with it quickly rather then trying to cover it up and then the public found out that you have an issue any ways and then you just look bad. You actually look quite good if you say "yup, we got that wrong but here's the fix". Everyone will forgive and forget, because they know that where there'll be complex system, there will be problems.

Omer: In recent times, the ethics of full disclosure has been questioned. There are more corporate and political pressures on security researchers, especially if you remember Michael Lynn's controversy last year. What is your take on this?

Adam: Well again I think it's very dangerous that the commercial world is getting such a strong foothold into the rules that govern what we can do in the world of security, the rules about reverse engineering and so on. When laws start to back up philosophies that if there is something bad, you shouldn't talk about it rather then you should fix it. No one is allowed to talk about it; no one is allowed to fix it because in theory nobody knows that its there and what we found is that full disclosure does actually work. Manufacturers will fix things if you publicly disclose the fact that they've got a problem. If you don't, they would tend not to because they don't need to and they can save the money. But the bad guys would know about the problem. If the bunch of amateurs, who have nothing to gain, can find problems, then so can bunch of criminals, who have a lot to gain, financially motivated, they have the organizations, they have the skill, they are going to find the problem. So your best defense against that is to encourage people to look for problems and to deal with problems rather then punishing them for this. I think this is the most dangerous thing to do. They have been publishing about the so-called "hacker tools", but what's a hacker tool? If I write a tool that can catch the clones of the door entry tag, is that a hacker tool or is that a tool that the industry is using anyway to program the tags in the first place and if I am afraid to publish it because I will be prosecuted then the problem never gets fixed because nobody is even aware about it other then the bad guys.

Omer: How does your lab look like?

Adam: Imagine a big pile of random cables and wires, you know, the mad scientist lab basically. I collect a lot of hardware and whenever I see a device that I'd think might be usable, I buy it. I take lots of electronic out of junk piles as well, so if I see an old tape, I'll just rip the magnetic tape and use it somewhere. I keep on doing lots of random stuff. I have a very chaotic lab, 3 or 4 laptops tossing around, popped up computers everywhere.

A hardware firewall is a device that sits in between the internet and your network, protecting all computers on the inside from dangerous intruders on the outside.

As opposed to a software firewall (also known as a personal firewall), a hardware firewall is designed to protect ALL the computers on a network instead of just one PC. Another technique that is often used with hardware firewalls is called Stateful Packet Inspection, also known as SPI. With SPI, a hardware firewall analyzes additional characteristics of the data packet in order to determine what to do with it. It checks to see where the packet came from, if it was sent as a response to a user request for information, if it just "appeared" out of nowhere, etc... Combined with packet filtering, SPI really makes a firewall appliance "smart", as it can make decisions whether to block or allow data packets based on logical analysis.

Depending on the type of network they are designed for, hardware firewalls can cost anywhere from 0 for a home firewall appliance up to several thousand dollars for an enterprise-class device. Simple (easy to install and configure) hardware firewalls designed for home use are offered by D-Link, Lynksys, and NetGear. Impact Of Technology In Banking

In the world of banking and finance nothing stands still. The biggest change of all is in the, scope of the business of banking. RESERVE BANK'S EARLY INITIATIVES

-Saraf working group in early 1990s.
-Vasudevan working group in late 1990s.
-Barman working group in early 2000s.

Impact Of Technology In Banking

Based on the recommendations of these committees and working groups, the Reserve Bank issued suitable guidelines for the banks. In the 1980s, usage of technology for the back office operations of the banks predominated the scene. It was in the form of accounting of transactions and collection of MIS. In the inter-bank payment systems, it was in the form of clearing and settlement using the MICR technology.

Two momentous decisions of the Reserve Bank in the 1990s changed the scenario for ever there are:
a) The prescription of compulsory usage of technology in full measure by the new private sector banks as a precondition of the license and
b) The establishment of an exclusive research institute for banking technology institute for development and Research in Banking Technology.

As the new private sector banks came on the scene as technology-savvy banks and offered several innovative products at the front office for the customers based on technology, the demonstration effect caught on the reset of the banks. Multi channel offerings like machine based (ATMs and pc-Banking), card based (credit/Debit/Smart cards), Communication based (Tele-Banking and Internet Banking) ushered in Anytime and Anywhere Banking by the banks in India. The IDRBT has been instrumental in establishing a safe and secure, state of the art communication backbone in the from of the Indian Financial NETwork (INFINET) as a closed user group exclusively for the banking and financial sector in India.

CHANGING FACE OF BANKING SERVICES
Liberalization brought several changes to Indian service industry. Probably Indian banking industry learnt a tremendous lesson. Pre-liberalization, all we did at a bank was deposit and withdraw money. Service standards were pathetic, but all we could do was grin and bear it. Post-liberalization, the tables have turned. It's a consumer oriented market there.
